Returning to The Maelor School in September – Update for Pupils and Parents 20/7/20

As you will be aware the Welsh Government has called for all pupils to return to school for the autumn term. We have been working through the “operational guidance” to ensure that school is both safe and that the pupils receive a rigorous and balanced educational experience.

The guidance can be found here:- https://gov.wales/operational-guidance-schools-and-settings-autumn-term-covid-19

The guidance requires some significant changes to the way in which school will run; I will provide a more detailed report on how the school will keep pupils safe towards the middle of August.

Transport

We are still awaiting details of the rules for buses and transport. For now, we are assuming that the school buses will run as they did before the “lockdown” (although there may be adaptations such as facemasks required). As soon as we know more, I will let you know.

The first few days

All schools in the region are using the traditional training days Tuesday 1st September, Wednesday 2nd September as planning and preparing days. As there will be significant changes to the way in which school will run (entrance / exits, lunch and breaktime, rooms and timetables), we have decided to explain these details to the pupils in two halves.

Year 7,8, 10 and 13 will be in school on Thursday 3rd September.

Year 9, 11 and 12 will be in school on Friday 4th September.

Once this is done, ALL pupils will return to school on Monday 7th September and lessons will start immediately.

What will school be like?

Pupils will be “zoned” in the school in year group “bubbles”, they will have their normal timetable and be in their normal sets. They will have their same teachers and be in their sets / groups but the teachers will move to them. Break and Lunchtime will have to be taken within their bubbles.

More details including the arrangements for the canteen will be available later in August.

Uniform.

As per the guidance, full school uniform will be required.
