Record Breaking A level results

Today students and staff at The Maelor Sixth were celebrating record-breaking results at A level. Amazingly 50% of grades achieved were A* or A with 74% getting A*-B.

This outstanding achievement is more extraordinary when you consider that these students were unable to take both their GCSE and AS level exams due to the Covid pandemic. This is the first time many of them have sat in a hall to sit formal exams.

Headteacher Simon Ellis commented “We have always had a reputation for high performance, these results will be amongst the absolute best of state or private school outcomes in the country. Despite having experienced online learning and closures due to covid show the sheer dedication of these young people and their families that have supported them. We wish them well as they move on to their next destinations. The skills of persistence, determination and dedication will serve them well in the future.”

Director of Sixth form Mrs Penny Ellwood said “ I am so proud of how resilient the students have been, working hard throughout the pandemic these results are well deserved and I’m really pleased to see so many achieving the results they need for their university or apprenticeship places”

• Emily Soden from Overton achieved 5A*/A and is aiming to pursue a degree in Medicine.

• Natasha Allcock from Penley will study Psychology at Cardiff University. 
• Nilufer Aumeerally from Tallern Green will be studying Philosophy & English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. 
• Anabelle Bailey from Wrexham is aiming to pursue a degree in Medicine. 
• Felicity Brand from Marchwiel will study Nutrition at the University of Leeds. 
• Morgan Burke from Wrexham will study Veterinary Medicine & Surgery at Harper and Keele Veterinary School 
• Beth Edwards from Ruabon will study Psychology at Cardiff University 
• Caitlin Edwards from Hanmer will be studying Chemistry with Study Abroad at the University of Leeds 
• Bronwyn Gurr from Bettisfield will be studying Mathematics at the University of Durham. 
• Pip Hardiman from Malpas will study Veterinary Science at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London. 
• Hannah Kassim from Cross Lanes will study Chemistry for Drug Discovery at the University of Bath. 
• Fern McBride from Isycoed achieved will study Biomedical Science at Bangor University. 
• Jessica Owen from Garden Village will study Midwifery at the University of Manchester. 
• Ethan Parr from Wrexham achieved will study Economics with a year abroad at the University of Bath. 
• Ella Roberts from Cross Lanes will study Biology at the University of York.
