Aims of the department
Within Mathematics and Numeracy our aims for pupils are:
- to develop a deep, broad and increasingly complex conceptual understanding of mathematics
- to enable pupils to communicate effectively with symbols
- to gain fluency in the use of mathematical skills
- to develop strong logical reasoning skills
- to be able to develop strategies in order to solve problems, including those involved in real life
Structure of the curriculum
Pupils are taught by specialist teachers across the areas of Number, Algebra, Shape and Space and Handling Data.
At GCSE, financial mathematics and other applications of numeracy as well as non-calculator and calculator mathematics are areas of focus.
At A level topics are divided between Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, Probability and Statistics.
