Summary of Assessment

This specification is divided into a total of 6 units: three AS units and three A2 units.

Advanced Subsidary (3 units)

Area of study: Baroque instrumental
  • Part 1: Exam 20%
    A Board set test of candidates' understanding of musical elements as displayed in instrunlental Baroque music (1650-1750).
  • Part 2: Coursework 20%
    Candidates will submit an essay outlining the significant changes and developments in one of three named strands of stage music.
  • Part 3: Performance
    Ensemble and/or solo performance assessed by a visiting examiner. Candidates will have the opportunity of performing one of the compositions submitted for MU2.

Advanced (the above plus the following A2 units)

Area of Study: Music in the 20th Century.
  • Part 1 Aural and Stylistic Perception 20%
    A Board set test based on pre-recorded music taken from Western Art music of the 20th century.
  • Part 2 20%
    A Board set test of 1 Y2 hours. Candidates will study a prescribed set work and place the work within a broader musical perspective.
