Course Information

Advanced Subsidiary AS
Advanced Level AS+A2

Examination Board: WJEC

Course Requirement

For both options, the requirements would usually be a pass or higher at GNVQ Intennediate or a Grade B or higher or a higher grade GCSE. However, consideration will be given to prospective candidates who do not have this qualification.

AS - One Year Course

This course would be ideal for those candidates who wish to extend their knowledge of Computing, without wishing to specialise in the subject to A2 level, as well as being an obvious choice for those who do wish to study the subject to A2 level.

The AS course consists of two taught modules (CPI and CP2)which cover 'Software and System Development' and 'The Computer, Data and Applications' respectively. Also there is a practical module, CP3 that deals with the development of computer system using school facilities. The assessment allocation for each module is approximately one-third of the total marks.

A2 - Two Year Course

Students wishing to take the A2 course will follow the AS course in the first year. In the second year, course content is similar - it also consists of two taught modules (CP4 and CP5), which cover 'Software and System Development' and 'The Computer, Data and Applications' in more detail than at AS level.

The practical module, CP6, deals with the Re-analysis and Enhancement of the computer system developed in AS module CP3. The assessment allocation for each module is again approximately one - third of the total marks.
