Course Information

Advanced Subsidiary AS
Advanced Level AS+A2

Why study Chemistry?

Chemistry is everywhere. You wear a polyester shirt, pour milk from a polythene bottle, carry a polyvinylchloride bag, walk on a polypropylene carpet, sit on polystyrene furniture and feed your computer with polyvinylacetate disks. All these materials are plastics and you will study these in Organic Chemistry.

Course Requirements

A grade BB or above in Double Award Science and a grade C or above in Mathematics at GCSE level for Advanced Level [AS + A2].
A grade CC or above in Double Award Science for Advanced Subsidiary if not going on to do Advanced Level.

Content and Assessment

Both AS and 'A' level will be modular courses.
The AS course is designed to be completed in one year.
The A2 part of the 'A' level course will be completed in the second year following the successful completion of the AS course.

The AS course consists of 3 modules with 3 examinations and a practical assessment.
The A2 course consists of a further 3 modules with 3 examinations and a practical assessment.

Where might this course lead me?

Chemistry can take you anywhere. It could see you rafting through the Amazon, collecting valuable scientific information as an environmentalist or searching for a cure for cancer. Or perhaps you may prefer to become a marine chemist working the world's oceans, studying life beneath the surface.

Whatever you want to do - chemistry can help you do it. That is because chemistry can help you to get into almost any career you care to think of. From law, aviation and art, to fashion, sales and city dealing - the list is endless. Surprised? You shouldn't be. Chemistry can open up a whole world of possibilities to you. It is the essential science to study biochemistry, medicine, veterinary science, metallurgy, pharmacy, pharmacology, material science, food technology, dentistry, brewing and chemical engineering.
