Advanced Subsidiary AS
Advanced Level A2

Aims

Business Studies develops a critical understanding of the internal workings and management of organisations, and in particular, the process of decision-making in a dynamic external environment. Organisations may be large or small, manufacturing or service, local, regional or multinational, profit making or non profit making. Business behaviour can be studied from the perspective of a range of stakeholders including customers, manager, creditors, owners/shareholders and employees. In addition, there are economic, environmental, ethical, governmental, legal, social and technological issues associated with business activity.

Modules

The AS modules have the same titles as the A modules. In order to gain a well-rounded understanding of business studies knowledge and understanding is part of both the AS and A Level specification. However, the A Level will further develop higher-level skills and extend beyond the AS in terms of breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding.

Marketing - The processes of identifying, targeting and satisfying customers with an emphasis on objectives, strategy and tactics.

Accounting and Finance - The use of accounting and financial information as an aid to decision making and financial control through contribution, profit, and cash flow.

People - The interrelationships in the organisational structure, leadership style and motivation, and the implications of these for effective planning and management of human resources.

Operations Management - The way an organisation use inputs and business processes, improve efficiency and quality to satisfy customers.

External influences - How the business environment provides opportunities and imposes constraints on the pursuit of short-term and long-term objectives.

Objectives and Strategy - An emphasis on the strategic importance of clear objectives.

Assessment

AS Level Examination

  • Unit 1 - Marketing and Accounting and Finance – Two compulsory stimulus Response Questions.
  • Unit 2 - People and Operations Management – A Number of Compulsory Questions based on a pre-released Case Study.
  • Unit 3 - External Influences and Objectives and Strategy - A Number of Compulsory Questions based on a pre-released Case Study.

A2 Level Examination

  • Unit 4 - Marketing and Accounting and Finance, People and Operations Management - Business Decision-making Case Study.
  • Unit 5 - Business Report and Essay or Coursework Project.
  • Unit 6 - External Influences and Objectives and Strategy – Case Study.
