Sixth Form at The Maelor School

Social Mobile

Recently more and more young people have chosen to invest their future with the Maelor School, this could be due to the school being placed in the top 100 comprehensive schools in the U.K. Over the last 3 years the number of sixth form students has risen from around 60 to 148 with an ever increasing number of students joining the sixth form from several other schools in the area.

Subjects

The school has responded positively to a new government initiative to provide and promote a larger range of subjects in order to develop a larger range of skills in the post 16 curriculum, to include the traditional academic subjects as well as a range of new opportunities. For the academic year 2010/2011 the latest addition to our wide range of subjects is BTEC Public Services.

The Welsh Baccalaureate is taken by all students and considerably broadens their understanding of life in Wales and its relationship to the rest of the world. It also recognises the wide range of activities, work experience and community service that all our students participate in. Gaining a Welsh Baccalaureate is equivalent to an 'A' grade at 'A' level.

Students attending the Maelor School sixth form can also take advantage of many other opportunities offered by the Wrexham Consortium, enabling students to study at Ysgol Rhiwabon or Yale College for one or more of their courses.

New Facilities

The school's new video conferencing facilities now enable Sixth form students to link up with students from other post 16 providers this also ensures the viability of minority subjects.

Teaching

The school's highly experienced team of A Level specialist teachers who work with our students, from which we are expecting very good results.

Role in the school community

The relationship with the local community has always been an important feature of the sixth form students’ school life; During the academic year students have been involved in helping the community at large as well as helping younger pupils with their reading and mathematical skills. They also provide support to the school's P.E department through helping in lessons.
