Careers Wales provides independent and impartial careers information, advice and guidance to help pupils make informed and reasoned decisions on their learning and career options. These high quality services are delivered through practices that challenge discrimination and promote equality of opportunity.

          Year 11 Choices            Information for Parents and Carers

Choosing subjects in Year 9:

DO:
     • Choose subjects you enjoy
     • Choose subjects you are good at
     • Find out which subjects you need if you have a chosen career in mind
     • Keep your options open by making a balanced choice
     • Talk to your Careers Adviser
     • Talk to your parents or carer and your teachers

DON'T:
     • Choose a subject because your friend is taking it
     • Reject a subject because you think it's ‘for girls' or ‘for boys'
     • Choose or reject a subject because you like or dislike a teacher
     • Choose a subject only because you think it will be easy
     • Choose a new subject without finding out more about it
     • Decide at the last minute


What to do after Year 11:

It's always better to explore all of your options so that you can make a decision that's best for you.

Options include:
     • 6th Form
     • College
     • Apprenticeships – (it is up to you to find a company to take you on)
     • Employment
     • Setting up your own business
     • Studying or working abroad
     • Youth Gateway
     • Traineeships

Information for Parents & Carers

Careers Guidance for school pupils in secondary education -

In order to advise young people to make realistic career choices, the Careers Wales Adviser will draw on information about each pupil.  This is obtained from the school and directly from the young person, either during the interview or by questionnaire.  It will be limited to information that is relevant to your son or daughter's future plans.

This information will be treated in confidence and is covered by the Data Protection Act.  It cannot be used without permission unless Careers Wales is required to disclose the information by law. 

Examples of information held will include:

• Name, address and telephone number
• Date of birth
• Health issues that may affect future plans
• Additional support needs
• Contact details of any other persons or agencies supporting your son or daughter
• Details of any work experience placements from school.

We encourage parents and carers to take an active role in their child's career planning and we therefore look forward to meeting you over the next few years at Parents Evenings and other events. You will also receive further updates from Careers Wales at key points of your son or daughters time in school.
