Victoria Kente's Visit here

We have been successful in being awarded a British Council Cymru grant to develop our links with St. Saviour's School in Lesotho. The link started when a teacher from our partner school came to Penley in October 2007 and a teacher from the Maelor School visited Lesotho during the early part of 2008. Since then there have been further visits of teachers in October 2008 and February 2009. The British Council granted us funding for another year which means that students from both schools will be able to visit each other during the coming academic year. Four students from St. Saviour's High School visit in October 2009 and four students from The MAelor School will travel to Lesotho in February. This is a really exciting new phase of the relationship between our two school.

Wales and Lesotho are national partners. Both countries have similar populations and size, they are both bilingual and are equally blessed with a high rainfall!

Lesotho is a country which is completely surrounded by South Africa. It is an upland country with most of the land higher than Snowdon!

Our school has strong links with a school called St Saviour's High School in the north east of Lesotho. Lots of joint curriculum projects have been carried out between the two schools. All year 9 pupils at The Maelor School have been involved with our new friends by writing letters to explain what life is like living in Wales. We have also received some letters back describing life in Lesotho. Other projects include a study of food miles. We felt very guilty when e realised how far our food had come to arrive on our table compared to our friends in Lesotho.

leshoto3 All pupils learn English at school because it is one of the official languages of the country. Here is an extract from one of the letters from a pupil in St. Saviour's School

"My school is St Saviour's High School. My teachers are about 16 the pupils in my class are 47. The classes in my school are 10, we do about 9 subjects. We wear 2 uniforms, which are; Grey trousers, with white shirts, and khaki trousers, with khaki shirts"
