Pupils are encouraged to participate in a wide range of extra- curricular activities. There are a number of clubs and societies which aim to widen and develop the interests of pupils including the Science Club, Computers, The Urdd etc., in addition to a range of music, drama and sporting activities. The school participates in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme operating through the Wrexham Award Council.
We have weekly visits from award coordinators, who help the participants through all aspects of the award from helping organise service opportunities to supervising the final expedition. It is a great way to learn the social and mental skills that are so essential in later life. This scheme has proved extremely popular with the students, with a substantial proportion of years 10 and above taking part and achieving highly. We are very proud of the success attained in its recent years. This year alone 7 Sixth form pupils are involved in the gold award expedition in the Lake District and hope to meet the Duke of Edinburgh Later this year!
Most activities take place during the lunchtime but other pursuits, such as extended band rehearsals and sporting fixtures take place after school. Orienteering, expeditions and other outdoor activities take place at weekends. The school is fortunate in having the use of a sixteen-seater minibus to extend the range of experiences on offer.
Musical activities underscore the life of the school with individual soloists and ensembles contributing to assemblies and the school wind band, the orchestra and the choir, performing concerts both in school and in the community. There are a variety of ensembles that play in the Eisteddfod and in other recitals, not to forget some excellent rock bands that have flourished in recent years. Highlights include performing at the Royal Albert Hall in Verdi's Requiem, a nationwide broadcast on the BBC's Music Live festival in June 2000 featuring the School's Soul Band.
The School's string orchestra gave an outstanding performance in the final of the National Music for Youth competition at the Royal Festival Hall in July 2003 and again in 2006 they competed in the same competition at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. A number of soloist also competed in the finals of the Urdd with one going on to win the competition in her class.
Our last drama production 'The Wok And Roll Aladdin' was highly commended by all who saw it, and proved a big hit with the pupils also. We are now looking forward to the next school production of 'Oliver', due to take place in November.
