1. What is the 5x60 scheme?

As part of a new Sports Council Wales initiative, the Secondary School Sport scheme, known as '5x60' has now expanded into Maelor School. 5x60 aims to encourage pupils who are currently not involved in extra-curricular sport, at school, to participate more on a regular basis. The scheme is a key target of the Welsh Assembly Government's, Climbing Higher strategy. The aim is for pupils to take part in 5x60 minutes of exercise every week.

Through this programme Maelor School the pupils will have the opportunity to try a range of activities that are not currently available to them in school at present. School pupils will have ownership of the programme and will be able to shape it to suit their needs.

"The success of 5x60 is not only in the number of additional young people now enjoying a variety of extra-curricular activities but also in the positive way it is being used to teach new skills, such as becoming qualified young leaders. I am confident that 5x60 will continue to have a positive impact on school sport, and will help young people to become the leaders and coaches of the future." (Rhodri Glyn Thomas, Sports Minister) Back

2. Why is 5x60 being introduced?

Health specialists have stated that young people need to participate in 5 hours of physical activity every week in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. 5 hours = 5x60minutes = 5x60!

The programme is an extension of the Sports Council for Wales' Dragon Sport Scheme, which facilitates the delivery of extra-curricular sport and physical activity in primary schools across Wales. Sports council for Wales figures identify that only 24% secondary age children do 5x60mins of physical activity per week. As a result children progressing from Dragon Sport into year 7 are lacking opportunities to continue extra-curricular activity.

The benefits to keeping active when you are a teenager are huge!

•  It helps you relax.

•  It helps you sleep better.

•  It relieves stress and tension.

•  It improves concentration.

•  It gives you the opportunity to make new friends.

3. How do you get involved in 5x60 Activities

Your new school 5x60 officer is Miss Horlock based in the PE Department 20 hours a week. Ask your PE teacher to direct you to the 5x60 Officer in your school. The officer will tell you of all the exciting activities that are available! Miss Horlock's role is to consult with the pupils, listen to their needs and the barriers which prevent them from participating in activity. Miss Horlock will timetable a programme of activities that suit the pupils' needs. These activities can take place before school, lunchtime after school and at weekends. It promises to be an exciting time in Maelor School over the next few years. 5x60 is set to transform the school playing fields, pool and gymnasium into hubs of bustling activity from daybreak to nightfall. 4. What 5x60 activities are happening now?

The 5x60 activities at Maelor School have been chosen by the pupils through answering a 5x60 questionnaire at the start of term. Most activities are run by volunteers and are therefore free. Every single pupil at Maelor School is welcome to attend a 5x60 activity. We look forward to seeing you at one of our activities; bring your friends along too! Back

CHEERLEADING CLUB

Cheerleading club started with very high numbers (over 40 pupils) and is open to all years. It was really good to see some boys attending too! However the numbers have recently dropped due to exams and the school production. There is now a professional coach delivering the sessions with 'pom poms' and you can learn new dance routines so try your best to come along! Pupils must remember to bring full PE Kit and a packed lunch. Back to table

STREET DANCE CLUB

The new lunchtime dance sessions have proven to be very successful with over 30 girls attending the sessions and 15-20 girls attending on a regular basis in order to improve their skills and have fun. One-six form pupil, and one-year eleven pupil have been assisting the delivery of the sessions.

GIRLS RUGBY

A girls Rugby taster session took place on Wednesday the 19 th December with 7 girls attending. Marc Roberts, the Wrexham Rugby Development Officer delivered the session in the Gymnasium. The girls Rugby Club is due to commence after February Half Term when it is less dark and a bit
warmer! The girls have signed a petition of over 90 names, demanding a girls rugby club to be set up and for more rugby opportunities in curriculum time lessons. This list has resulted in promotion in the Wrexham Leader newspaper, to read the article click on

5. Tips to stay healthy

1. Get organised. Join in with the 5x60 clubs at school and in your community.

2 . Work out a plan. Find the best time for you to take part either before school, lunchtime or after school.

3. Don't waste your holidays and weekends in front of the TV or on the play station.

4. Take up a challenge. If you fancy something different, take up rock climbing or surfing.

5. Keep motivated. Involve other people like friends and family to help keep up your interest.

6. Get some coaching, if you are thinking about getting serious in a particular sport or want to improve your skills?

7. Stay focused. Don't get put off just because you've missed a session, just pick up from where you left off. Back

6. Are you interested in becoming apart of the Maelr School 5X60 Sports Crew?

We are always keen to find more people who would like to help with our 5x60 activities. If you are interested in volunteering for 5x60, there are many ways in which you can get involved. From leading 5x60 activities or helping leaders, to simply taking a register or being an extra pair of hands, it all helps in making the scheme a success! Benefits to you include ongoing support, extra training and qualifications and massive job satisfaction. Alarge part of Miss Horlock's role is to finding suitable deliverers. Opportunities currently exist for Maelor School pupils to attend sports leadership training courses which will provide pupils with a qualification and enable them to contribute to the 5x60 workforce in this capacity. This is a fantastic oppotrtunity for GCSE pupils and sixth formers to gain bonus points for University and will strengthen your CV! Volunteers and coaches from the local community will also be involved in delivering the programme. Pupils have allready taken advantage of this opportunity and attended Dance Leaders courses and starting out Netball. Back

7. 5x60 and the wider community

Volunteers and coaches from the local community will also be involved in delivering the programme. In addition providing community club links, exit routes for the pupils will be essential to make the programme sustainable. Miss Horlock is currently recruiting volunteers as helpers to support the development of the extra-curricular clubs. Rather than just dropping off the children at a sports club, the 5x60 programme at Maelor School aims to find keen, focused, like minded individuals who are determined to make a difference in sporting terms to their local area. This may not be just in the form of coaching and delivering specific sessions, but in the form of reporting on activities, acting a press officer, finding funding for clubs and many other aspects. We want parents to roll up their sleeves and have a go at pitching in with activities. Local clubs are invited into schools to offer young people the opportunity to try a wider range of activities. Current delivery opportunities exist in Maelor School. If you are interested please contact Rhian Horlock on 01948 830291 or email rhian.horlock@wrexham.gov.uk Back
